In a number of older games, when designing ships, there is sometimes an option called a 'mount'. This is basically something that alters existing components so that for example, a weapon may have greater firepower ( and probably cost, size and use of supplies/ordinance), or a miniturisation effect, reducing size of components allowing more to be fitted per ship. So far the following mounts have been developed though more are likely to be added. Missile Miniturisation - reduces size of missile launcher. Direct Fire Miniturisation - reduces size of some (or all) direct fire weapons (excludes SRD types) Range Improvement - For direct fire type weapons, but does have penalities such as a loss of accuracy. 20cm armor mount (and also 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 cm). These mounts increase the thickness of armor (the thicker only available for bigger ships). This reduces the need to use 40 or 50 pieces of armor, fewer pieces do the same job and streamlines ship design and game play. Please note, any comments / ideas always appreciated

I'd agree with that idea. Mounts made a huge difference in SE4, and could add an additional uniqueness to our game too.
